Snowdust Memories

Once upon a time, I was walking along a winter field, and came across a mysterious crow sitting in a bare, snow covered tree. As I passed underneath it, the bird shook, and the sky around me filled with magical, tingly snow dust from the shaking branch. For the rest of that day and for quite some time afterward, my perspective on life seemed to, well, change. Amazing what a little snowdust can do. ~ Inspired by a poem from Robert Frost.

A Forgiving Sort of Thing

I don't know why, but when winter approaches, I think more about my soul. I believe that my virtual soul has the same needs as any other, so about this time I start hanging out in snowy areas of the grid, preferably where there are old cathedrals and snow covered grounds nearby. Cold crystalline snow has this wonderful, cleansing, forgiving quality to it. And forgiveness liberates the soul.

On holiday

Artistic influences

When I was younger, I would try to find a quiet place somewhere in the overcrowded, middle-class home I was being raised in, and go through the various and sundry art books that were in the house. If it was quiet enough, and the sunlight was coming in through the windows just right, I always found myself being transported into a different time, a different world. The likes of Maxfield Parrish, Edward Hopper and others filled my mind, and I was taken away to another place. Years later, I still find myself being taken away.

Recently, in Second Life, I have been experimenting with landscapes found at Landscapes Unlimited. My avatar can once again be taken away, and in fact, it is quite often. And the cool thing is you can create your own destinations, based on your influences, if you want. So my imagination and I decided to do a scenario that melds Second Life with influences like I described above, as well as all those countless Holy Cards my parents had lying around.

To create this, I rezzed a landscape from Landscapes Unlimited, picked up the attire listed below, and took a few snapshots. I then created a sky image in Corel Painter 11 to use in the background. Then I pulled them all into Photoshop and tuned em all up for your viewing pleasure.

Floating

I recently visited the SL Pose Fair 2010, and in between bouts of freezing up due to the high amount of lag, I was able to pick up some very nice poses. If you create a photo or SL style blog, having particular poses comes in handy, because it allows you more creative freedom when taking screen captures “in world.” After picking up a pose from pda while I was there, I decided to do a little bit of photoshopping, to create a vision of how this particular animation made me feel. As always, feel free to just go ahead and click this jump if you want to obtain references to what my avatar is wearing below.

In my SL viewer, I manipulated the sky settings until the ground I was on was totally bleached out (but you could just as easily create a one prim green screen backdrop), then I further tweaked the light settings until I had just the amount of shading on the face and body that I wanted. Then I took a screen capture and saved it to my hard drive. For some reason, activating this pose gave me the feeling that I was hovering next to a wall of ivy. So I decided to create a background using a stock photo. A quick search in Google for “ivy on wall” brought me to this site, offering free use of textures. I opened up the texture I settled on in Photoshop and rotated it to my liking, then desaturated it to give me the feeling of totally white leaves. Maybe in my mind they were leaves that had been covered in ash from an exploding, other worldly volcano. My mind is warped that way.

Once I had the background the way I wanted it, I opened the screen capture and extracted the image of my avatar. Then I duplicated the extraction layer and filled my avatar shape with black to use as a shadow layer. I then used one of the distort filters and transformed the shadow to give the effect of the avatar casting a slightly wavy shaded area on the leafy background. I duplicated this shadow layer twice and erased some spots in each duplicated layer to give the illusion of unevenly lit shadows, then I grouped all three shadow layers. Then it was just a matter of applying a slight vignette to the background layer using a marquee tool, lens blur and adjustment levels. Then I flattened the image and saved it to a png format, and voila, another insane in the membrane creation is complete.

The Tourist

Yesterday I was bumming around. You know, just hanging out. Yeah, just wanderin. You know how that goes? An SL friend sent me a link to go check out a monastery. I tend to like nice secluded places. In a way, I am somewhat monastic in my approach to life, both virtual and non-virtual. Not that I never do things spontaneously, like combust. I do that a lot. But I like to think about stuff. I’m sort of cursed that way. Oh, since some of the style blogs pick up my posts, feel free to just go ahead and click this jump if you want to obtain references. Only if you want to, you know, avoid reading the drivel.

So, being the proper tourist I am, I packed up my sunglasses, and I went there. Checked my Emerald radar. Only two people around. Hmm, why not do a photo shoot then? Took a few pics, sorted them out, and ultimately deemed two worthy of a blog entry. See, I don’t post a lot. I don’t document everywhere I go in SL, nor everything I adorn my avatar with. That would be interesting to do maybe. But I know I would get bored with it. For me, doing a post takes time…patience. I think about writing up my various and sundry SL experiences a lot, churn them over in my mind. But I abandon far, far more than I actually produce. It has to be the right time. Kind of like the kidney stone that I had last week.

It sat in my left kidney, building up in size to about 4 millimeters. Waiting. Who knows how long? Unhurried. Silent. Picking its time. Then, for a reason known only to it, a couple of Mondays ago, it decided to move. Cutting through the ureter, down to the bladder. But after all that pain, did it decide to go ahead and come on out? No. It waited some more. Just like that sniper team did in Dealey Plaza back in ’63. It wanted to make sure it was the absolute right moment. And when it was finally darn good and ready, out it came.

A few Sundays ago, I sat on my living room sofa, looking at the snow outside, and decided I would once again do something that I love to do way too much recently: absolutely nothing. I have been reading several books at the same time, as I normally do, and on this day, I felt like giving myself some eye candy. So I began to flip channels on the TV, and lo and behold, on Turner Classic Movies, Doctor Zhivago was just starting. A movie that had somehow slipped by me until now. So, for 200 minutes, I was whisked away. And what came out of it, in SL terms, is what you see here. As always, you can jump or click to go straight to the style details seen in the pictures below.

So where does this leave us? Now that I am gone, no longer here. You see, while I was running after you, my heart finally gave out. All I can say is that I did what I had to do when I sent you away. Fate would decide if we would one day again unite. And if it should happen, as cruel, cold winds sometimes have it, that the memory of both of us becomes nothing but nameless numbers, on a nameless list which is later mislaid, all that matters is that ever present timelessness, where there are dreams, dreams, dreams, all that your heart can hold. So the other night I went out for some refreshment. Just a neighborhood joint. It could have been anywhere. Ah, it mighta been Check’s Germantown Café, or possibly The Nutshell over in Bury St Edmonds. Or maybe it was St. Marks Bar down on 1st Ave and St. Marks Place. Who knows? After so many rounds in a public house, one gets, um, confused. I was to meet an old acquaintance there, to, you know, catch up on things. As it turned out, I had quite a wait. During that time, I enjoyed just being in the moment. It felt good to be surrounded by people, noticing being noticed, and terrifically, wonderfully, joyfully unnoticed. So I sat there, waiting, watching, listening, breathing, drinking, being. Hey, when I was in college, I actually earned money waiting. On tables. Now I wait, for free. If you are like me, solitarily spinning on a globe along with a zillion other twirling inhabitants, you can take great pleasure in just being surrounded by friends and strangers, while you're simply relaxed and payin attention. It’s probably true that a stranger is just a friend you haven’t met yet. I wonder about that sometimes, but I try to give everybody the benefit of my ever-lovin, soul-searchin doubt.

Oh well. I can say that it turned out to be an enjoyable evening. I know I will do it again soon. I will be sitting there, or standing in a doorway, and maybe somebody will wonder. No, I’m not waiting on a lady. I'm just waiting on a friend.

How many came before it really doesn't matter

If you live long enough, hopefully you reach a point where reflection on what really matters comes to you as easily as the aches and pains that never really bothered you before now. So just a few words on that will now ensue. As always, if you so wish, you can very easily jump straight to the style details seen in the pictures below. Go ahead if you want. We’re all over 21, footloose and fancy-free.

So, I can reflect with the finest of them, now that I have aged like the best of the bottled in bond that sits stowed away in the liquor cabinet (which is really just an extra space in my kitchen, beneath the drawer that houses my telephone book and other items I never use, like a cracked wooden spatula, a veddy, veddy old and impractical British tea strainer, an egg timer with an outrageously obnoxious ring to it, etc.). As the seasons continue to fly by, I find myself taking stock quite often, sort of a continuous self-assessment, iff’n you will. Am I the kind of person I thought I would be? Do I mean something to someone? Do I treat other people with the same amount of kindness I show the wild birds that visit my backyard? Am I remorseful for all the bad crap I have done in my life? Do I have an appreciation for any good I have managed to contribute? Do I fully understand both the impact and the reasons I have found, and lost, love in my life?

Why is it that love is the most salient thing that always comes up as the most important marker in these physical, emotional and spiritual self analytics that I engage in? I am single now, living almost totally alone (I do have a cat) in a small house tucked away on the edge of a far-from-a-metropolis burb, in what used to be nuthin but rollin farmland, a place I chose in 2006 when I sought some retreat for myself, simply because there were dense woods lining the back of the property, where a few resilient deer, owls, Cooper’s hawks and a pileated woodpecker or two still manage to eek out survival amongst the humans. I had love, and I lost it, and I tell myself now that should that cosmic dust ever once again manage to land on my fading solar panels, that I will treat it much better than I ever treated it before. Which is to say, treat it like it has no future, and no past.

So here’s some sage advice from a drifting astronaut, boys and girls. If you are lucky enough to be there, be in the moment. And just make damn sure you tell her, or him, how you feel. Say what you feel and feel what you say. There will never be the same moment to do it in.

What matters is now…the future, the past…heck fire, it don't matter to me. If you really feel that you need some time to be free. Time to go out searching for yourself, hoping to find…time ... to go to find.

The Plague Doctor

Sometimes we all wax nostalgic for the good old days. The good old days, rich and good—for those who qualify. But them old days weren’t always so good. Take the Great Plague for instance. Or don’t take it and jump straight to the style details if you so desire.

Back in the "old" days, a nasty old bubonic plague wiped out maybe 20 percent of the population of London, England, probably 100,000 people. And as people travelled, they took it with them. Or at least, the fleas on the rats that travelled with the people did. And how did humanity respond to the crisis? Um, not stellar. But hey, there were the Plague Doctors, who wore an early form of what you might call a hazmat suit. Well, it was the latest high tech gear of the time. It was believed that the plague was spread by “bad air,” and that by wearing a mask and long coat, the wearer could draw out the evil from the patient. Oh, that and you could also cover the victim with mercury and place them in an oven. Ouch.

So we have progressed; that's right, we've come a long way, baby. Oh but there’s still plenty of “bad air” around, isn’t there. As sane, rational people try to change the way the health care game is played in the good ol USA, there is no lack of flea carrying rats that spread infection like, um, the plague. Hey, maybe the Plague Doctor talisman I am wearing (from the Singing Moth) will ward off the haters. You think?

Jeux Sans Frontières

Hiya. Yep, it’s been awhile. I took a brief hiatus from posting. So, what the heck have I been doing? For all four of you who might be interested (and I do appreciate you being that way), I will document as best I can what I have been up to in this post. For those who just wanna go out in SL and buy some of the stuff seen on my avatar pic below, I totally understand the need to consume, so just skip my missive and jump here.

So, my absence, explained. It’s not that I have been staying away from all exploits virtual. During my away time, I have checked out other online planets… Blue Mars, OpenSim and even some games that place you in a different reality (rather fond of Mirror’s Edge at the moment). Deep inside me lives the explorer, and I tend to do what other explorers do, which is to say, I explore.

Aside from that, I have a non-virtual reality occupation (yeah, I know, I am one of the lucky ones who are employed right now), which keeps me quite busy. I burn through some long hours, workin’ for the man, who actually works for the woman. For those of you who are curious, I keep the lights on in my real life residence by slaving away in technology, doing project management and quality assurance for a software company in a health-related industry. That’s a mouthful, huh. It wasn’t what I started out to do, way back in the early 1900s, when I studied fine art (concentration in painting) at the University of Louisville. But it is what I evolved into over the years, as I adapted, grew up, fell in love, got married, got divorced, struck out alone, discovered the beauty of friendship, adapted some more, evolved some more, got my heart broken, de-adapted and de-evolved, put food on the table, survived various and sundry physical and emotional ailments, most of which were self-inflicted, learned some more, became an engineer, lost my soul, and found it again. So I work a lot, but believe me, I do not owe my soul to the company sto’. I use it to pay for me-and-my-cat’s food, but my RL work does not define me. I define it. If it goes poof tomorrow (and it often does), I may lose my mortgage, but I won’t lose my very being. Hey, I was a Boy Scout. “Be prepared” applies to metaphysics, too.

So when I am not toiling away in that reality, I go exploring, looking for nothing, searching for something. When weather permits, I like going out. Nuthin like the great outdoors. But when baby it’s cold outside, I tend to look inward, often within the very confines of my home base, near to this here computer which I hand-built a year or so ago (walked a mile in the snow just to snag my nvidia card, yada, yada, yada). Just a few feet away, stacked on some shelving for years and years, lives my old collection of music CDs, just begging to be converted to a different digital format, not for technology’s sake, but just so that they could be listened to again. I was mistreating them, so I have embarked upon easing their pain.

In the process, I am rediscovering long, lost parts of myself. For instance, listening once again, after all these eons, to the wonderful Love Ain’t for Keeping off of Who’s Next brought me back to lying on a blanket under a tree under a brilliant blue sky, looking into the eyes of the beautiful woman I loved, while leaves slowly fell all around us, and no sound existed except for the gentle wind and our heartbeats, and I closed my eyes, and I felt my soul leaving my body, and intertwine with the all the stars in all the galaxies, and her. Stuff like that. And so, of late, little trips like that have been occupying my mind. All these songs. As I convert them, I hear them all over again. I wouldn’t necessarily call it living in the past. See, the Song Is Over, but the music, well it just goes. So, that's kinda what I been doin. Maybe I start writing more. There's something to say, I will, huh? I dunno.

I surf from blog to blog, and without that, I don’t know how I would find interesting avatar clothes to keep in my virtual closet. The other day I visited ou la la mode, and saw a post from Elisabeth Villiers that inspired me so much, I had to go get the stuff. Trust me, it looks a WHOLE LOT better on her av than it does mine, but still, it was fun to get, and fun to take some pictures of.

Once again, a lot of this look is from women’s shops. I don’t know what it is lately, I just feel like it’s a challenge. Psychologically, maybe it’s a Jungian thing. The Jungian thing, sir. All I know is, you gotta go do what you desire to do. So just go do it. I normally document SLurls where I get stuff, but just go read Elisabeth’s post. Summer ain't over

Summer is not dead yet. That would be September 21. So go out and enjoy the season while it still exists. Hey, you should probably not even be in front of your computer right now. But if you want to stay and read the rest of this screed, feel free to continue.

There’s no better way to enjoy the summer in a nice baggy pair of shorts. So I went out and bought a pair of chick’s shorts. Yeah, that’s right, why not. Electrons are electrons, dude, time to get over any hangups about it, lol. These here ones are from NINIKO (came with a nice belt and also has a patterned lining in the legs), and so is the shirt. For whatever its worth, I got on women’s hair, from Maitreya, and a female tank top, from 141.

The glasses I’m wearing are from *D*. Normally you will find me in my Nea Ban Wayfarers, but these No. 22’s are quite nice—they come with a built-in clip on shade and lots of other options, too. Besides, I met the creator, MandyMandy, in her shop and I think she is really cool. Anyway, I am outta here for now, gonna go out and try to soak up a little more Vitamin D. The Public Option

So, how ya feeling about the abandonment of the public option in the health care reform debacle? The whole business is rather unhealthy, doncha think? If watching uninformed morons scream at each other at "town hall forums" doesn’t make you sick, more power to you.

I have gone on the record in an earlier post exactly where ol Wyatt comes down on the issue. See, back in aught five, I got laid off from a job I had worked at for 10 years. Poof. No health insurance. Oh, wait, I could have paid for Cobra, $1200 dollars a month. Yiffy. Hey. Don't worry. I am not gonna get all political on you right now. But personally, if having a public option means people who end up in similar situations can continue seeing the doctor of their choice, and get their insurance subsidized until they can get back on their feet, I am all for it. And if you are with me, I might also point out, don’t be mad at the insurance companies, okay? They are just doing what any for-profit, soulless entity would do. Buy off the competition, deny your claim, and reward the executive ranks with lush salaries. Yeeehahh!

On a personal note

Recently a great little club in SL, where I would go to listen to all kinds of indie and alt music, spun by the very best DJs, among some really friendly and cool people, just went poof. The owners, who had been partnered, had a falling out and went their separate ways. Once again, SL ends up so very much like RL.

I have said before in an earlier post that I choose not to take a partner in SL. It doesn’t mean I look down on those who do. It’s just something I choose; it’s my way. I have made many friends in SL and I cherish each friendship I have, in SL and RL. My own personal take is that the best part of ANY relationship is friendship. All you need in life is one true friend, because you never EVER lose a true friend. With that, I leave you this.

Relax (Don’t Do It)

One of my all time favorite things to do is relax. If it’s not number one on my list, it’s gotta be way up there. And to really do it well, you might consider a good cigar.

I would just as soon kick around the sims, smoking a fine full-flavored Maduro and wearing clothes that just make me feel all comfy inside than do anything else, quite frankly. And the clothes thing…it really is just a hobby of mine, by no means a profession, now that I am unfettered and alive--nobody calling me up for favors, no one’s future to decide. Like anybody else, I get inspired. In this case, it came from one maechi Pizzicato, from a picture I saw here, as well as her blog post here. I took what I saw her wearing, and blended it with stuff already in my virtual footlocker. There are like a jillion bloggers out there, passionately documenting some really interesting finds. Some have great stories to tell. Some, like me, just ramble and drift. It’s a great big beautiful online world full of all manner of individuals who have something to share, like it or not. Miserere

Sometimes, even my avatar’s soul needs cleansing. After all, one’s spirit can accumulate a lot of wear and tear even in a virtual setting. So today, I made a pilgrimage back to one of the first places I discovered in SL, the San Leibowitz Cathedral.

So, I don’t want to throw a lot of religiosity your way, non-denominational or otherwise. But what I needed was a balancing. A level-setting of sorts. There is something about a cathedral that does it for me. That and a heartfully sung Latin choir seem to get me the soothing I need. Even if you don’t know Latin, the desire behind it all can really renew and replenish. Have a listen to this, and here is a bit of translation:

But lo, Thou requirest truth in the inward parts: and shalt make me to understand wisdom secretly.

Orange Crush

The last time I wore orange, I had just busted out of county, and I was bustin loose on the dance floor at Gnarled Oak. Those were the days. Trust me, my look was much worse than my bite, but still, maybe after I pried the bars and slipped out the side of the Lockup Motel, I should have ditched my duds, in order to appear, more, eh, refined.

So, here is a much more refined look than what county gives you when you stay at their inn. The jacket and pants were part of one pack, something I scored at a place called Menlosophy. Nuthin fancy really. Simple. Comfortable. After all, you shouldn’t have to spend your time fussing over things you wear. The real fun is to go out and meet friends and explore, not just put on clothes and constantly get involved in photo shoots. That’s why I have given up being a supermodel. I was never really cut out for it. Nah, it’s strictly low profile for me now. It’s good enough that I can keep my photo off the wall at the post office. Yeah. I’ve mellowed out. Yawn. “When I was an art student.” It almost has a self-serving ring to it. But, at one time, I was indeed an art student. I studied art. I painted. I cleaned my brushes with my hands and got cerulean blue on my Big Macs and fries. But even way back then, it was more about appreciating the moment I was in, than any art I was creating. And looking back even further than that, even when I was a teeny tiny lil Wyatt, it’s always been about enjoying the hell outta every moment I can.

But hey, you can’t always enjoy the moment. Sometimes, the moments are like stepping into the Twilight Zone, place is a mad-house, feels like being cloned. Hey, which just makes it more important to find the joy of living in as much as you can. Anyway, this here outfit, I think, has a certain joie de vivre about it. And it is totally inspired by a fellow blogger, Shane Kirshner, who writes like a dream and does some really awe-inspiring SL style looks and stuff. I read her post here, and I had to go out and get the pants. That’s how it is with me. I don’t really go out and "seek" too much. I just drift. And seize. Seize, baby. Seize.

Do the Right Thang

Now that the 2009 Tour de France is over, there is almost no need at all to watch TV, methinks. Nah. What ya really need to do is kick it back a notch, relax and listen to some tunes, maybe. And why not kick it in clothes that are made for doing just that? Here’s something I slogged together from the huge pile o’ clothes in my virtual closet.

Well, it really isn’t a closet. After all, the abandoned train station I live in doesn’t have a closet. Anyway, this is an outfit that basically says to the world: I don’t give a rat’s rear end about anything you can sell me on your boob tube. You know what I mean? Let me do my thang, baby, and you do yours.

You won’t find a prim television set anywhere near my virtual place of residence. A purely symbolic gesture on my behalf, gentle reader. And you don’t have to be Elvis Presley to despise most of what’s on RL TV at any given moment. Just look at the major headlines on Yahoo, choose the most prurient, the most sensational, and the most nonsensical, and that’s what you will be fed on the telly. Oh, and they’ll pass it off as “important news.”

So, take this friendly advice from ol’ WW. If it’s not the greatest sporting event in the world (TdF), and it’s not on PBS (for the time being, until they privatize it all), just let the thing sit. If you don’t have a spouse or significant other to make love with, or children or pets to be near, or a fantastic book to read, or a wonderful piece of honest to god nature to move around in, do the next best thing and go online. At least there, you can connect with others, and even in a virtual way, that’s a whole lot better than countin flowers on the wall.

Coffee is for closers only. Do I have your attention now? So, I begin this missive with a little advice from Mr. Blake. From the home office. For those of you who need pictures to get the picture, here is an all-business, no business-at-all outfit for the well-heeled, Southern Gentleman.

It’s the kind of an outfit that an old money guy like yourself might wear on a pleasant Sunday afternoon. Suit from Casa Del Shai.

You think I'm messing with you? I am not messing with you. I'm here from downtown. I'm here from Mitch and Murray. And I'm here on a mission of mercy. You see, what’s really got me in a tizzy tonight is health care reform. Yeah that’s right. It’s not going to happen. Once again, the lobbyists are going to win. And believe me, they have been beating this drum for a long, long time. For awhile now, all the incessant rubbish on the radio hatred shows has been about is health care, health care, health care. They’ve whipped up the ignorant into a frenzy on this. And of course, the fix has always been in, in Congress. There is no way they were ever going to lose.

If it doesn’t make you angry, or if you are one of the ones who think that health insurance should be like auto insurance (the groovy analogy that Rush and his ilk are hawking), then why don’t you try this? First, get really, really sick. Not just an upset stomach, or the flu. No, I mean sick sick. You know, the kind of sick where you need serious help. Guess what, it happens. A lot. And then, go try to file a claim, that is of course, if you even have insurance. You will likely find out that John Grisham’s Rainmaker is not as fictional as you think it is. And if you are incensed about the lack of any real, meaningful reform, if it really makes your blood boil, don’t for a minute think that there is some kind of revolution out there you can join, some trees you can spike somewhere, out in that great big forest that is definitely gonna go down. Skip it, pal. Because what will happen will be sort of like what happened to my favorite plumber, a true warrior, Archibald “Harry” Tuttle, in Brazil. You will get hit with one slap suit, then another, then another, and pretty soon, you will be nothing but a spinning, swirling pile of paperwork…then poof. You disappear. If you really must look into things, I have only one lil piece of advice: “Follow the money.” (Deep Throat, somewhere in a parking garage near DC.)

NOH8 SL: My Civic Duty

I considered it my civic SL duty to particpate in the NOH8 SL™ campaign. What Is NOH8 SL? It's a photography project started by Trace Osterham in Second Life, in support of Adam Bouska’s real life anti-Proposition 8 campaign. Photos of nearly 350 avatars have been taken for the cause, and are being shown at an in-world gallery.

Trace took the photo above shortly after the campaign went viral. You can see it on flickr, here. Feel free to favorite the livin bejeesus out of it. :)

Lawless, Where Are You?

So once again, I haven't posted in awhile. But yesterday, to celebrate my nation-state's birthday, I managed to get a little drunk and log in to Second Life to celebrate. I hung out with some peeps I know, listened to some good tunes, got drunker, said stupid things, listened to others say stupid things, drifted into meaninglessness, almost passed out. I tried to take some snapshots of the goings on, but my resolution is set so high, almost every time I tried, my viewer application crashed. The idiotic shot above was one of the ones that survived, and I laid it over a background from here in PS.

The "fashion look" I donned was one that I got from reading a blog by Lawless McBride, many moons ago. I keep checking it but he has not posted in a while. I do hope he is okay, but as you can see with me, sometimes you just, well, drift. For those of you who are interested in this particular crazy look, read all about it here, and get the stuff. No one could tell you how to to it better than Mr. McBride anyway, whom I really miss for his marvelous writing, his style, and his energy.

Otherwise, I leave you now with a thoughtful and reflective message from a very dear friend, Alexis Zorba, whom I met on a trip to Crete long ago, a journey that changed my life:

Mister Specific

Well here is the usual blogger excuse coming up: "Gee gosh golly, I have been so busy in RL that I have not had time to post anything lately." That sounds so mealy-mouthed, but hey...whattyagonnado? New job, had to go to a wedding, pulled a ligament in my carburetor, yadda-de-dada-da, etc. So now that the tired, lame reason I have been remiss in communicating here for a lil bit is officially out of the way, on with the show.

Lately it seems that a lot of dudes in SL are actually starting to get "fashion savvy." Which helps make the virtual world a better place maybe. Why? Because it means more people are creating their own content, and more people are seeing that content, and more people are obtaining it, through purchase or giveaways. And I believe that to be a good thing. Because it opens the whole thing up and makes the virtual experience much more round, instead of flat. Know what I mean? Clothing and avatar enhancements are, of course, just a small part of that experience. But getting and wearing clothes for your avi is, perhaps, a more readily consumed experience for people who are just coming into the world. It enables them to be a little creative with something. No it's not making art that gets hung on a wall in a museum, but it's still creating. Let the philosophers and critics theorize, comment, and critique, but if you don't get that you can create something--a moment, a look, a scene, or whatever--just lying on the hood of a 1969 Camaro, looking up at a meteor shower, drinking a cold PBR and listening to some Creedence on the car stereo before the battery goes dead, well, I just don't think yer ever gonna get it.

Now for this particular look, I didn't have to dig too deep into my virtual closet. And you know, when it comes down to it, I don't really want to dig too deep to decide what to wear. Hey you out there...I am not knocking it if that's what you are into. As for me, I just want to hit it and get it. Grab something and go. The skin (Fallen Gods), hair (Find Ash), sunglasses (Nea Ban) and taped fingers (SiniStyle) are kind of staples for me. Actually, I tend to alternate between three or four skin types from Fallen Gods, Corrupted Innocence and Belleza.

On this day, I paid homage to James Brudenell, as I felt like I was going to do a repeat of the Charge of the Light Brigade, so why not choose a cardigan? This one from Sweetest Good-bye seemed to fit the bill. The jeans--well, it brings me to another point here. I went through a phase where I had to have jeans with the rolled up cuffs. I musta bought a dozen pairs. Maybe more. But I've sort of had my fill for a little while. Now I tend to want to find flares or boot cuts, still with the prim legs, but no roll-ups. These ones from League are just fine and dandy.

Shoes are Cargos from Hoorenbeek. When I started to become "fashion aware" in world, back in the day, around 1932, Hoorenbeek was my first go-to choice. Then I sort of stopped hitting it for a time, seeking out remote, small shops who offer a little "twist" in what they provide. But you gotta hand it to Hoorenbeek. I did a search in my inventory recently for things marked "Hoorenbeek." And you know what? They do a lot of really good work, really cool stuff.

When I am out on one of my virtual shopping sprees, I generally don't go creating a whole new look from scratch. I take what I have on, and maybe add something else. So the other morning, I went shopping in my swimmin trunks and sandals, and came up with this look. The polo shirt is from Coco, and is a women's item, so it took a tiny bit of adjusting on the collar and sleeves, but no big deal. Hey, it's a lesson I learned while shopping in the thrift stores when I was in college. Take what generally fits, right off the racks, and modify later if you gotta. Same goes for the jeans, from League. Women's. A tight fit, but it'll do in a pinch. :)

Details, details. Sometimes you don't really want to care about the details. And most times, hell, you really shouldn’t give a damn. Why sweat slingin around your virtual closet looking for something to impress the ladies?

Is it cool outside? Just grab the closest sweater to the top o' the pile and put it on, dude. I don't know about you, but it's been like a cold and rainy Seattle around here, and I ain't anywhere close to Starbucks City.

Sometimes nuthin can be a real cool hand. Okay, I promise not to say that line anymore. So…all you guys out there, if you are looking for some great finds for your avatar, there are lots of bloggers out there who can supply you with some real good ideas. I am definitely not what you would call a fashionista. More of an intellectual ruffian. My girlfriend in college once told me I ate like a stevedore. Champagne desire and a beer budget. Grew up on catfish and Creedence Clearwater Revival. Rollin dice when I was thirteen. Breakin the law when I was…oh there I go digressing again. Anyway, I would encourage you to not get hung up about whether or not the fashion blog is for female avs or male avs. Quite often, in fact most of the time, the clothes work both ways, save for all those frilly underthings (which I suppose depends on your particular lifestyle). So here’s a case in point. I was poking around on flickr and came upon this great picture in a group I sent some of my own pictures to. The flickrite, Juicily Loon, provided a link to her blog, and voila, I threw together this quick outfit, based solely on her kind and gracious posting. Granted, there are some subtle differences in the actual selections, but this look is all hers. So thanks Juicily! Great fashion advice from a fellow blogger and flickr member!

The Look of the Minute

Sometimes nuthin can be a real cool hand. That has absolutely nothing to do with this post; I’ve just been wanting to put those words down somewhere. This is all about the Look of the Minute. Not the Look of the Day, or the Look of the Month, or Decade, or yada. It’s none of that, but hey, it’s much more resonating than the Look of the Millisecond. I spent quite a few minutes putting together this ensemble, hand selecting the shirt (Dutch Touch), velour pants (Zaara), boots (Redgrave) and other items from deep within my Second Life clothes closet, and then I logged in some additional time painstakingly snapping pics and documenting it especially for you, dear reader. All those minutes, all that thought and effort. All for something that will come and go extremely fast. Don’t it always seem to go, that you don’t know what you got till it’s gone?

So…what exactly is it, this assemblage of stuff that you presumably don’t even have at the moment, and you won’t even know what it is (or was) until some point at which it is no longer there? Whatever you want to call it, you can fully expect it to last at least one full minute, a look for the ages: the many ages that could be experienced over sixty delicious seconds. All while doing it in a wonderful Carlos Castaneda-ish way, of course.

The specific reasons I had for selecting the look are unclear to me now, as I sit here slaving away at my beat up old Corona Portable, stopping only to intake loving spoonfuls of freshly microwaved Smart Chili and long sips of cool, straight-from-the-icebox Seagram’s Ginger Ale. I guess I wanted something to go live the sporting life in. You know, with the roof down, chin up, a devil-may-care attitude, Elvis sneer, and so forth. Even if just for a little while. After donning this garb, I went out to seek some mind-numbing explorations in the virtual world of SL, first stopping by Mellifera to look at some very personable and very mysterious birds. Lit out from there and ended up wrecking the Karmann Ghia (wrapped it around a tree, old sport), and then I hobbled the last quarter mile over to the Gnarled Oak to soak up some fine brew and good tunes. Soon, I drifted off into a deep, drunken dream state, and all went blissfully black. When I awoke, there was no nurse hovering over me, but I had a definite WTF moment…and this strange outfit on. The contents of which, and the SLurls to find them, are listed below. So go. You haven’t much time to participate in this particular sartorial splendor. Ah, crap. Too late. It’s gone. Sigh. WTF.

I like to look at pictures taken by residents of virtual worlds, including Second Life. And I have taken a liking to reading the “fashion blogs” that some people are working on. You never know what new place, event, work of art, item of clothing or just plain silliness will come up, all of which are usually very much worth checking out. Recently while surfing through some flickr entries from SL, I came across a picture from one Emi Bade, who also writes a fashion blog. I was taken with the vibrant color of the outfit, and although it was of a female avatar, I decided I would make it work for me.
So the picture above is what the final result looks like. I must say, it looks MUCH better on her than it does on me. But still, it was a lot of fun to throw together. My friend Ava and I both took some snapshots, and then I used Photoshop to put together a montage of our collaboration. A montage homage to Emi! Purple Hayzd

My dear friend Avalon and I have had lots of fun experimenting with clothing and doing other hilarious and fun things in Second Life. Yesterday evening we visited a “prom” at Gnarled Oak in honor of celebrating a partnership between two SL residents. [Partnering in Second Life is sort of like a marriage in real life. While I have chosen not to be partnered in SL or RL, I certainly respect and wish nothing but happiness to those who are.] The event was well attended, lively, great music and a lot of fun. And the attire was, well, prom-ish, or at least semi-formal. I do not have a tuxedo, and I only own two suits, so I chose the white one, which contrasted in a rather unusual way with the Dust skin from Fallen Gods I have been sporting lately. Ava commented, maybe half jokingly, that she would like to see me in a purple skin. With her request in mind, today I made a quick trip back to Fallen Gods to see what I could find.
Thus I now bring you the second “fashion post” of this blog, the result of a quick hunt for purple people parts. At Fallen Gods, there are a number of quality fantasy-oriented skins, accessories and shapes. Walking around, I found something I thought would fit the bill: a skin called Amethyst. It’s not an overpowering or vibrant purple, which is good--that’s not what I was seeking. And given that it has the same features I like that the Dust skin has, I was quite happy with it. Back at my chillin’ place, I went through my closet and rummaged around a little to throw this “look” together. So without further ado, here is a purple Wyatt, followed by a list of places to acquire the same items, should you be as insane as I am and wish to do so. Ava, I hope this meets your expectations.:)

The Cologne Cathedral

Okay, I have a strange bent, I suppose. One of many, in fact. But from my very earliest days in SL, when I accidentally came upon the San Leibowitz Cathedral, I’ve had a fascination with churches and cathedrals in Second Life. What’s really funny is the way, two years later, I am still sort of “discovering” them by chance. As “Google-savvy” as I like to think myself as being, I have resisted simply opening up the SL search engine and typing out “cathedral.” I like it when I discover these little jewels in other ways. Perhaps a friend tells me about a place, or I stumble upon a reference as I virtually drift along.
Which brings me to a build of incredible beauty, the Cologne Cathedral at Dom zu Koeln. Wow. I happened upon a snapshot on flickr, and then immediately teleported to that location. I do not know much about the builder, a resident named Constructor Projects. Looking at the resident’s profile does not reveal much except an association with two groups, one of which appears to be a Cologne-based entity in RL that is doing some collaborative building work in SL. After doing a little poking around on Google, I did manage to find a reference or two, including some information on a blog post of a fellow virtual explorer, Aleister Kronos at Ambling in Second Life, from whom I quote (via Creative Commons license):
“The RL building was started over 800 years ago, but was not completed until 1880 - a grand total of 632 years in the making. The SL building, on the Koelner Dom sim, took rather less time. Even so it is (or so I’m told) a 15,000 prim construction.”
I will send an IM to the author of that blog and see if I can find out more. But in the meantime, if you enjoy the beauty of a good build, go see it, and enjoy some more snapshots.

Minor housekeeping note

My apologies to you, dear reader, if you have been viewing the posts on this blog using the Firefox web browser. While I use Firefox myself, when I edit posts I had been using Internet Explorer. Yesterday while scanning this blog, I FINALLY noticed that when reading articles from the home page, the "Read more..." links on blog posts here, here, and here were NOT working in Firefox, but working just fine in Internet Explorer. I had manually implemented a solution for the "Read more..." link to appear in blog posts that seemed rather lengthy to me. But I neglected to do my due diligence in the area of quality assurance by testing the solution in both browser types. The issue should now be remedied. Again, sorry about that! To all three of my regular readers!

Clothes make the AV?

There are a lot of “fashion” blogs devoted to style and clothing in SL now. When I first started, I don’t think there were that many. At least I didn’t notice right away. Each blog I have come across has its own sense of style and sensibility. Some are store owners, most I think are written by people who simply have a passion for it. The ones that bring a smile to my face are those that provide a personal insight into the author, maybe tell a little story, a joke or two. But they all tend to give you good ideas on how to spend Linden dollars in Second Life, which hey, it’s a part of the game, right? Why have a currency and not use it? Spendin it on clothes makes sense to me, after all, you don’t have to use a lot of your in-world budget on groceries, now, do you?
What you do with your avatar, and what you choose to “wear” in a virtual world, can be as mindless and enjoyable as a fine constitutional on a pleasant spring evening. Or, it can be as purpose driven as throwing a dart into a dartboard at the local pub. How’s them there words for deep thought? I have talked to some who want to make their avatar as far out as possible. And then there are those who want to make their avs look as much like they do in RL. Some people change with the wind, too. All admirable pursuits, I say!

So this post is my first one (and possibly my last) that deals with “fashion” in SL. And with it, I bring you, dear reader, a grungy Wyatt. The word grungy is a term of many connotations. Some associate it with a particular music lifestyle. In my case, it means my normal state of dress in real life—and also here in electron land. In real life, I own one suit. In-world, I own two. Go figure. But I don’t wear any of them much. Mostly what I have in the closet, virtual and otherwise, is a boatload of stuff that is suited to just kickin around in. As for the style part…what the hell do I really know about that? My only true fashion dogma is just what gets thrown together on any given day. First, take whatever’s clean. Second, don’t put too much thought into it. Your first impulse may turn out to be wrong, but in the grander scheme of things, it doesn’t really matter. It’s nuthin, man. Just have fun with it. Evolution of an avatar

Prior to logging in to Second Life for the first time, I didn’t have much experience in creating an avatar. Sure I had done multiplayer games, mostly Team Fortress Classic, but back then gaming did not provide a lot of customization options for your character. Mostly, you got to choose from a character type (often I was a Medic in TFC), and that’s about it. The one exception I can think of was one of the earlier versions of the Tiger Woods PGA Tour games which allowed you greater control over player shape, facial characteristics, hair, etc. Using controls similar to what is found in Second Life, I was able to create a golfer that looked pretty much like I did in real life (but I could never hope to hit a golf ball in real life like my player did in PGA Tour).
Once I created an account in Second Life and began exploring the grid with my newly created avatar, I realized right away what many others have noticed. The look and the walk were entirely too rigid, stilted and very android like. I had no “Linden Dollars” to buy a nice new skin and an animation overrider, and I had no one else coaching me, so the first thing I did was begin fooling around with the sliders on my avatar’s shape. I can’t really say I was going for one particular look, but I knew I wanted something that I could feel comfortable with. Looking around me, it seemed to me that all the “male” avatars had gargantuan biceps, and an amped up testosterone aura about them. That was decidedly not what I sought. But I was able to craft something that seemed reasonable. Soon, I was able to purchase some different hair and a different skin, and the first Wyatt “look” was made. I was okay with it at the time, but looking back, I can see it was sort of primitive.
And so, as my experiences “in world” grew, I made more acquaintances, and saw more opportunities to change my avatar into something I would appreciate more. An animation override corrected the stilted walk, and I continued to make minor changes to the shape. I resisted buying a shape for a long time. The one time I actually bought a shape after stumbling upon one in a store, it made very little change to what I already had done on my own.
Skins and shapes are really extensions of clothing, what we choose to project to fellow residents in SL. The skin is something I now change quite a bit, perhaps not as frequently as other attire. I don’t change my shape that much, though. To me, the shape I have is something I always default back to. And for that reason, I created a spreadsheet to capture all the slider settings. I made a copy of the blank version of the spreadsheet, with different settings for male and female avatars, and uploaded it here.

An Oil Refinery in Second Life

When I was a kid growing up, one of my “windows on the world” was the back seat of a 1957 Chevy station wagon. When the family went on a vacation, or even a day trip somewhere closer to home, I would sit and watch the scenery roll by. As long as I can remember, the visual landscape held sway over me, generating many daydreams, the source of so much wonder. And it always seemed to me that some of the greatest mysteries to me sort of popped up out of the everyday scenery. For some reason, it was the factories, the refineries and the many industrial sites I saw, with their smokestacks, storage tanks, pipes, and belching flames, that became sort of a Disneyland of industrial waste. For the kid with his face pasted against the window of that old Chevy, they just seemed magical and deadly at the same time.

As I grew as a person and as an artist in RL, those scenes became the fuel for my imagination and quite a lot of my RL artwork. So that’s why as I explore virtual worlds and come upon similar tableaus, I feel so very much at home. Recently, while checking out an art gallery in Chosen Misery, I stumbled upon a scene that blew me away: An actual oil refinery, complete with towers, tanks, lights, belching smoke, hissing steam from pipes, the works. I rubbed my eyes…could this really be? Was I having a flashback to my childhood dreams? I checked the creator of the build, one Tonk Tomcat, and went to his picks. Sure enough, I got a landmark to Tonktastic, his store, where, not only was there another oil refinery (his shop is actually built on it), but he was actually selling it! Man! Of course, I had to have it! Even though my current home parcel is sort of maxed out on prims, and his central piece is almost 800 prims alone, I figure one day I will eventually have the space for it. I had to message Mr. Tomcat, out of appreciation. He shortly responded with a note of thanks, and also told me of a couple other places where I could find his build. One was in the City of Lost Angels, and not having been there before, I went to check it out. But at the time, it was sort of lagged, and as it’s also a “no fly” zone (probably due to some combat RPs held there), I was not able to find the specific site of the refinery. If anyone has a direct SLURL to it, please message me with it. I did see another build of the refinery at Oxymoron (LOVE the name), and once again, it was outstanding. If you are like me and you have an appreciation for the quiet beauty, mystery and allure of such things, be sure to check this out. In the meantime, here are a couple more snapshots, and I also have uploaded some to a flickr page with more views of it.

Creating a reflective floor in Second Life

So...this isn’t anything new. By now you have seen plenty of great examples in Second Life of “reflective” floors in shops and other builds. These are floors in structures that give the appearance of something highly polished and shiny, so polished that they appear to reflect the images of objects placed on them, including surrounding walls and ceilings. Such floors can currently be found at places like Shapes by Zada, HD’s Custom Cycles and Nymphetamine. One thing you may notice quickly is avatars are not “reflected,” thus giving a clue that what you are experiencing is not reflection at all, but illusory. Which to me is perhaps a great example of Magritte’s La Trahison des Images (Ceci n’est pas une pipe…This is not a pipe.).

Well I had been telling myself I wanted to fool around with trying that Trompe-loeil technique out, so here’s how I approached it. Please note that you can do this with even fewer cubes, but I wanted to be prepared to shade the stuff under the floor if I judged it to be necessary. After doing it, I decided in that particular case, it wasn’t. You will need to work in the sky or high enough above water level to not spoil the effect.

For this exercise you will need two textures, a totally clear texture and a texture for the flooring. Both can be obtained as freebies. Search for free texture. Just be sure the clear texture is totally clear. If you feel like spending money for the flooring texture, what I used is Jewell Lamourfou’s “Rich Barn Floor” texture, found at Distressed.

1. Rez a cube with the following attributes:

Size X: 0.500
Size Y: 10.000
Size Z: 5.000
Rotation X: 0.00
Rotation Y: 0.00
Rotation Z: 270.00

2. Keep default texture but change color to a shaded green.

3. Move cube high enough in the sky to duplicate everything underneath the floor.

4. Duplicate the cube directly beneath the existing cube by shift dragging, or more preferable, Copy Selection, Center copy on its underlying edge.

You should now have what amounts to a green wall, 10 x 10, up in the air.

5. By duplication or new creation, generate four “side” walls for the 10 x 10 wall, each with the dimension of X: 0.500, Y: 5.000 and Z: 5.000, and place them at Z:180.00 degrees of rotation on each side of the 10 x 10 wall. Basically, create one, move it into place butting up against one side of the 10 x 10 wall, then shift drag a copy to the opposing side, placing it appropriately. Then shift drag copies of each newly created side wall directly beneath it. Keep the default texture and make them all a shaded green color. Note here: I just eyeballed the placement of each, if you want to get 100% gap-free, use math or the method of your choice. :)

You should now have a 10 x 10 wall with two 5 x 10 side walls.

6. Create two “ceilings” by duplication of the original cube with the following attributes:

Size X: 0.100
Size Y: 10.000
Size Z: 5.000
Rotation X: 270.00
Rotation Y: 0.00
Rotation Z: 270.00
Keep default texture but change color to a shaded green.

7. Move each “ceiling” to the top and bottom of the 10 x 10 wall, respectively. I did this by shift dragging one, changing its size and rotation, eyeballing it into position on the bottom, then copying by shift+dragging to the top.

You should now have what amounts to a 10 x 10 x 5 box, tilted toward you on its side.

8. Create the floor by duplicating one of the ceilings (shift + drag in edit mode) and moving it directly in the middle between both ceilings.

9. Change the attributes for the floor by first making it totally clear on all sides. In edit mode, Choose the totally clear texture. If you have duplicated one of the green ceilings, change the color back to white. Be sure and do that for all sides.

10. Stay in edit mode. If you didn’t, turn on “highlight transparent” (Ctrl+Alt+T) to find the floor, and go back into edit mode, because if you got out of it, the floor should now be totally invisible! Once you are safely in editing it you can turn highlight transparent off.

11. While in edit mode on the floor, click the Select Texture radio button and the Texture tab. Select the top of the floor texture. When you do, a bunch of white targets will appear on the top side of the floor only.

12. Double-click the Texture window and in the Pick: Texture dialog, navigate and select the floor texture you are choosing to use. You will likely need to stretch or otherwise adjust the repeats on the floor texture. For my texture, my adjustments were as follows:

Horizontal (U): 1.000
Vertical (V): 2.100

13. Staying in edit mode, and staying in Select Texture on the top of the floor, change Transparency to 26. You can fool around with this setting once you place objects in this little diorama to "reflect.”

14. Now begin adding objects you wish to reflect. You can simply create new objects with shapes and colors, use objects in your inventory that you have copy permissions on, or mix and match both. I chose the following:

Two copies of a copyable Nautilina Municipal Worklamp.

Two copies of a copyable interior painting I got as a bonus item in a build from Abiss.

Two copies of a copyable Emphasis Silver chair from Greene Concepts.

Two plain cubes, approximately X: 0.634 Y: 0.634 and Z: 1.181, blank texture, white color.

Two spinning cubes, each X: 0.500 Y: 0.500 and Z: 0.500, linked, with a slow rotation script. I chose a colorful stained glass texture I got in a freebie texture pack, and then made each of these cubes Glow by 0.10 and turned on Full Bright. I wanted to see an object that rotated in the reflection, so once I had the cubes identically “mirrored” and strategically placed and linked above the plain white cubes, I used the following script:

15. The name of the game now is to first place one set of objects where you want them above the floor, then “mirror” the objects by rotating them completely upside down beneath the floor. You can do this a number of different ways. I chose to rez an object, then shift drag it in edit mode to beneath the floor, then I rotated each object accordingly. Be creative. Have fun with it. Try rotating, glowing objects, lamps with lighting, etc.

16. Once you have the scene set the way you want, hide the bottom part of the diorama by duplicating the back wall to the front, then link everything together to ensure it all stays in place. In practice, you will need to submerge this on land and you may need to terrain edit to ensure the floor baseline is high enough to not have water underneath your floor, unless of course that is a desired effect you are going for. At any rate, have fun with your own “reflective” floor!

Graffiti artist does Wyatt's place

So I was out looking for some animations to use in a build I was working on. I have not progressed into doing my own animations yet. So much I want to do, but so much goofing off to accomplish first. I remembered that awhile back, I had purchased a beach towel that you threw over a railing, that had an animation in it that had the avatar hang upside down, arms dangling. So I went to the place I bought it (Sways Creations (120, 183, 21), thinking that maybe Sway might sell a full perms version of just the anim, but…couldn’t find it. Instead I saw a wonderful sculpture piece of a graffiti artist spray painting one of her shops. I looked for the creator, dileoo Kirax, read his profile and immediately went off to see if perhaps I could have my own graffiti artist do a number on my beach house.
Wow! I had to admit that even though recently I was telling myself I need to start creating instead of buying, I practically wanted to run off with the entire store, lol. I ended up bringing not only the graffiti guy back, but also…a skateboarder sculpture, a musical light box sculpture, a Che Guevera sculpture, and an Elvis avatar. My First "Find" in SL

What was one of the first things you remember shortly after joining the Second Life world? For me, that was shortly after Jan. 13, 2007. I can't remember Help Island that much. I think one of the first things I wanted to check out on my own was, pure and simple, the various types of terrain in SL. So I started doing some searches. "Snow" "Snowy Mountains" "Snowy Mountain Retreat," etc. And then looking at the map, I figured that terrain on the map that looked all white was snow terrain.

So I teleported there and just began flying around. I was stunned at once by the visual beauty of some places, and the utter garbage that could be seen just along side it. Hey, just like Real Life!

Out of the mist, I saw a cathedral. The San Leibowitz Cathedral. Wow. It was awesome. I landed and began walking around it. To this day, I have no idea of its "purpose," other than to just be. A look at the profile of the "creator" of the build doesn't reveal much at all. Perhaps I will IM him, but for now, I fly back there every now and then just to take in the beauty.
